Fraternity Plans Byron J. Horn Memorial Panel

As spring blooms in Gambier, the fraternity is preparing for the 2024 Byron J. Horn Memorial Panel. Each year, alumni return to Kenyon to talk with brothers about their careers and workplace experiences. Past panels included alumni from all walks of life, from recent graduates all the way up to seasoned professionals. This year, the panel will be hosted on Saturday, April 13th at the Lodge. In anticipation for the event, we asked Will Gardner, ‘24, current Alumni Chair, some questions about the panel and what it means to the fraternity.

Are you excited about the upcoming BJH memorial panel?

Yes, I am very excited for the upcoming BJH memorial panel. I think it will be a great way for alumni to see how well the chapter is doing and meet some of the potential new members. I also think it will be a great opportunity for networking, as BJH in the past has only allowed you to meet with one out of 3-5 people. Moreover, almost every other organization has an active alumni weekend when students are on campus and I’m excited to make this a tradition!

What did you like about past panels?

They were small, and so you could have in depth discussions and form interpersonal connections with the alumni you were assigned to. It was also nice that you could meet alumni who were involved in the chapter when our New Member Educators were pledging.

Why do you think the panel is important?

I think that the panel is important because it cements the bonds that the new member education process cultivates. As Delts we are committed to lives of excellence and are brothers for life. I believe this event exemplifies these notions, and shows that the alumni care. I think it also represents one of the ideals of BJH, as it shows selflessness to the active members of the chapter. Moreover, DKE has their weekend in the fall and their alumni turnout has been far superior. That’s why this alteration of the panel will allow us to see how much this chapter has meant to the alumni.

If you are interested in participating in the panel, please fill out the linked Google form: https://forms.gle/3PcEmbhsCMcwUZTN8. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Delts Continue To Serve Kenyon Community

Chi Chapter has a long history of community service, and we’re happy to report that the tradition remains strong in 2024. Working closely with the Red Cross, the Chapter hosted two blood drives almost back to back on January 26th and February 15th. Brothers helped the Red Cross harvest over 60 units of blood.

Working in Gund Commons, five brothers staffed the event with seven pledges. Enthusiasm in the fraternity is high, with brothers following through on their commitment to giving back to their community.

“Overall, the drives are running smoothly, and we get good attendance,” said Community Service Chair Christophe LeBlanc. “For as long as I’ve been in this role, the brothers are delivering.”

2024 Karnea to be Held July 31-August 4

This year, Karnea will be held July 31-August 4 in Cleveland, Ohio for initiated collegiate brothers and alumni.

According to Delta Tau Delta Nationals, “Every two years, the Karnea deliberates changes to the Fraternity Constitution and Bylaws and elects the new Arch Chapter. Karnea is a celebration of the Delta Tau Delta; a time when brothers, families and guests come together to share memories, learn new ideas and plans for the future. Karnea is the greatest of all Delt events for all the reasons noted. Karnea is a grand event, the Fraternity’s biennial convention. Karnea, which means “festival of Apollo,” is an event each member of the Fraternity should attend at least once in his life for in no other place does the Fraternity come to life in so many ways.”

The Benefits of Brotherhood

As you know, being a part of a fraternity offers more than just a social experience—as brothers, we gained a sense of community, a place to call home, preparation for post-grad life, and the life-changing, lifelong benefits of friendship, leadership, and shared values.

  • What do 85% of the executives of Fortune 500 companies and 80% of United States Presidents since 1900 have in common? According to Fraternity Advisor, they were all members of Greek organizations during college.
  • Fraternity and sorority membership helps young men and women cultivate leadership skills, gain a sense of social identity, and learn to work well with others. Fraternities and sororities not only offer the context to develop these skills but, just as importantly, can often help students work toward future internships and job opportunities. Employers like seeing the documented leadership experience that fraternity life can provide.
  • Networking is an integral part of the college experience and Greek life provides one of the strongest foundations for social interfacing with a network of peers. Greek organizations help build networks that often prove beneficial to students when looking for internships, employment, recommendations, or employees.

Delta Tau Delta takes young men and shapes them into functioning adults through leadership in the fraternity, charity work within the community, and networking for post-grad life. Greek life is an essential part of any collegiate system.

Collecting personal testimonials about the fraternity experience is important to our legacy. CLICK HERE and let us know how the benefits of Delta Tau Delta impacted your life.

A Farewell from Jeff Moritz ’86

Brothers,

As was announced this spring, I am stepping down as president of our alumni association on September 30.  I have truly enjoyed my 30 years working to keep Delta Tau Delta at Kenyon an important part of the Kenyon Experience.  I have gotten to know so many of you over the years, beginning as undergraduate members to alumni decades out of school.  Many of you hold our Lodge as a special place in your lives and being the primary caretaker has brought me much joy.  While I could not have done this job for so long without the financial support of our alumni, I am very grateful to Chuck Pariano, Byron Horn and Don Gest who have played an important role in the alumni association over the years.

I am a strong supporter of our fraternity because I firmly believe that being a part of Delta Tau Delta teaches young men many lifelong skills such as leadership and teamwork and builds lifelong friendships. We should all be proud to say we are associated with Chi Chapter.

I am turning the reins over to a new board of 25 alumni and a strong set of new officers.  Chi Chapter of Delta Tau Delta has been on campus for over 142 years, and I hope that it will continue for many more generations of Kenyon men.

Thank you,

Jeff Moritz ’86

Thank you, Brothers

Alumni support is at the heart of everything we do, and we can’t thank you enough for your continued support.

We hope to see your name listed on the Honor Roll of Donors again as we enter the 2023-24 Give Year.

Save the Date: Kenyon Homecoming September 28-30

This year, Kenyon homecoming is taking place September 28-30, and we want to see you there!

Every year, alumni from all over flock back to Gambier for homecoming to see all of their old Kenyon buddies, reminisce about the great times they shared together, and celebrate all of the things that make Kenyon so special.

Delta Tau Delta alumni are no exception, of course. For us Delta Tau Delta alumni, homecoming is a chance to get together with our brothers at our old stomping grounds and relive the glory days.

Don’t miss the chance to rekindle old Chi Chapter friendships and blaze new Delta Tau Delta alumni traditions this year. Reach out to a brother and make a plan to come celebrate homecoming with your fellow alumni on September 28-30.

We hope to see you there!

Celebrating 165 Years of Delta Tau Delta

This year, Delta Tau Delta celebrates 165 years since its founding in late 1858, at Bethany College in what is now West Virginia.

Delta Tau Delta was founded when eight men, angered by a fixed vote for a prize in oratory to be given at the Neotrophian Literary Society (a forum for students to practice and demonstrate skills in poetry, public speaking and writing essays), responded by forming a secret society. The purpose of the new society, known only by the Greek letters Delta Tau Delta, was to see the Neotrophian Society returned to popular control from the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and to form an organization of the student body drawn together by common aims, brotherly regard and desire for mutual support.

In those 165 years, over 143,000 brothers have been initiated into the fraternity across over 120 chapters. Chi chapter is proud to be a part of this broad, enduring brotherhood, and we look forward to a bright future for our fellow Delts.
