Seven Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

Happy Holidays!
While we often hear the holidays are “the most wonderful time of the year”–we know that’s not always the case. Delta Tau Delta cares about you. The holiday blues can affect anyone. Not only can the holidays be a stressful time, but COVID-19 can add to that stress.
Here are seven tips to get through any tough times this holiday season:
  1. Pause and take inventory – this is important so you can identify your feelings and emotions and make the right next step toward help. Perhaps we might even be able to find some gratitude while we’re at it.
  2. Identify ways to cope and find support while being aware of our own negative coping mechanisms, such as drinking or retail therapy.
  3. Talk to someone. You’re not alone. Loneliness and social isolation are twice as harmful to physical and mental health as obesity. If someone you know seems down, here is a resource for how to seize the awkward and help them. If you need to speak to someone, reach out to Talkspace. To get started, visit talkspace.com/delts and enter the email address Delta Tau Delta has on file for you (this may be your personal or school email address). You should receive a confirmation email within five minutes, if you don’t receive the confirmation email, please try another email address.
  4. Find out what fills your cup. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. This fall Delt hosted a program all about self-care.
  5. Bring self-care into your day. Stretch, go for walks, drink water. Check out this video recording about working out from home.
  6. Be patient with yourself. Moving forward when everything feels hard is difficult. Read this article about how to move forward when everything has ground to a halt.
  7. Check out the resources offered at Delt Ulifeline. Here you will find health and wellness resources and strategies for yourself and those you care about.
In the end, the most important thing to remember is to manage your expectations–for yourself and for others. Many of us have expectations for what the holidays should look like. We tend to compare our lives and families to others–but remember, all families have stressors.
We sincerely hope you take the time over these next few weeks to be gracious for the people and connections you have while also finding time to rest and rejuvenate.
